Maritime Operations - Skipper Restricted Limits

No matter which study option you choose you will have the opportunity to work with our highly experienced Maritime tutors as they show you how to use NMIT’s world-class maritime facilities.

Enter the bridge simulation suite, build your collision regulation skills, and learn how to skipper a vessel in a wide range of conditions. Here you can also build confidence with electronic navigation equipment (chart plotters, radar) whilst manoeuvring vessels in NZ ports.

Yes – you need to submit to MNZ with your SRL application, a current first aid certificate. This is included in your Skipper Restricted Limit Programme. If you already hold this, you need to provide evidence of your certificate when you enrol.

Note: You need to complete your 19 week online course work before attending a block course, otherwise you will not be able to complete the block course.

Applicants should be aware that they must provide a current medical examination certificate issued by a GP or equivalent (not more than two years old), to demonstrate that they are physically capable of undertaking crew duties aboard a vessel. The medical examination certificate must be submitted to the Programme Administrator.

Applicants need to be aware that they will need to have access to a powered vessel suitable to complete a minimum of 200 hours MNZ required sea time before the end of the programme.

Selection

Applicants will be provided with programme information to ensure the applicant is aware of the programme content, assessment policies and entry requirements and recommendations. All candidates who meet the entry requirements are accepted on the programme.  
Applicants for part-time study should discuss their plans with the Programme Coordinator.

Academic requirements

• NCEA Level 1 (80 credits at level 1), including 10 literacy credits and
• 10 numeracy credits

Note: If applicants have undertaken a qualification or examination other than NCEA (e.g. International Baccalaureate, Cambridge Examination), NMIT will assess this for academic entry equivalence.

Applicants (including those over 20 years of age) who are unable to evidence that they meet Academic Entry Requirements, but who can demonstrate acquired skills for tertiary study gained through study, work and/or life experience, may be approved for alternative entry by the Curriculum Manager or delegate.

English language requirements

If English is not the applicant’s first language, applicants will need to provide a result from a test or qualification on the acceptable alternatives English Proficiency Outcomes Table:

• IELTS 5.5 General or Academic (no lower than 5.0 in any subtest)

Note: Applicants who do not have evidence of English language skills and are a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident, may contact NMIT for an assessment. Applicants who have achieved NCEA Level 3 University Entrance requirements are not required to provide evidence of English language skills
IELTS scores used must be taken from a single IELTS Test Report Form and are valid for two years from the date of the test.

This SRL programme is a combination of distance learning with a set of block courses towards the end of your programme, before joining the block course on the Nelson campus and your MNZ final examination.

Generally, the following takes students 4 – 6 months.

• 19-week online course
• 200 hours of sea service
• MNZ Training Record Book

Structure and timetable

You can enrol any time during the year, however we recommend that you enrol as soon as you decide to start the seatime for the SRL. The structure is as follows:

1. Enrol with NMIT – get your Training Record book, get set-up with online access and meet your online tutors.
2. Work on your Training Record Book and various course assessments while you are gaining your seatime. The assessments can be submitted online or posted to us.
3. Attend one of the timetabled block courses (4-5 weeks) to complete your training, and have your MNZ Final Safety Oral Examination.

You will have a tutor allocated to you to work with you to complete your online assessments and ensure you have a plan to complete your programme.

Depending on the month you apply, you have several options to choose which block course to attend that works for you. 

You will be asked for the block course you wish to be booked onto, once we have received your application.

Additional costs

You will require navigation chartwork equipment including a calculator, parallel rulers, dividers and a drawing compass. We can supply this as a pack when you enrol – cost to be confirmed.

There is no arranged workplace component in this programme. However as the MNZ SRL Training Record Book(external link) is an important part of your programme completion and preparation for final MNZ licensing examination. The Training Record Book will be supplied to you free of charge, by NMIT IMINZ on your enrolment.

The Training Record Book should be fully completed on-job aboard your vessel; however the following tasks may be signed off by our tutors, if you cannot carry out these tasks onboard:

• Launching a liferaft
• Fire fighting and fire prevention tasks
• Onboard radar tasks
