Project Management for Primary Industries

This micro-credential is designed to upskill current primary industry employees, from the workforce to project managers, enabling them to increase their essential knowledge, skill and capabilities within their area of employment.

Learners who undertake this micro-credential will be recognised within their designated fields as having experience, skills and capabilities in project management and be competent to successfully design and execute projects in the primary industries sector.

On completion your staff will be able to:

Use project management methodologies, skills and tools to complete small projects
Apply project management knowledge to carry out a small project management cycle
Reflect on project management communication styles and interpersonal skills appropriate for a diverse workforce

Programme delivery and content

Delivery

Over 15 weeks learners will work through the following project management course modules to complete their qualification. They will be provided with templates (or can use company templates) and resources to take them through their learning via NMIT's online learning portal, Moodle.

You can expect:

Group classes taught by a tutor at your workplace (20 hours)
Workplace learning. (40 hours) Students will practice what they have learnt in a practical environment and will gather evidence that may include digital footage, images, and sound bites.
Self-directed learning (40 hours). This is managed by the learner, to revise and do their assessments in their own time

Project concepts

You will explore the definitions of a project and what project management involves as well as compare different project management methods.

This will help you to review the assessment requirements and think of a project you could carry out.

Plan your project | Weeks 1 -7

Scoping a project	Discuss the importance and purpose of scoping, create a scope statement List project tasks, create a Work Breakdown Schedule (WBS)
Software and tools	Discuss how different software and tools can support project management. Select software and tools for your project Find out workplace requirements Confirm your small project
Scheduling 1 (Critical Path)	Plan who will do what by creating a Responsibility Assignment Matrix (RAM) Sequence tasks in a logical order Identify a project’s critical path Create a network diagram
Scheduling 2 (Gantt)	Create a Gantt chart for your project
Estimating costs	Estimate the cost of materials and labour for your small project
Managing Risk	Identify, assess and plan for different risks that can impact a project Create a risk assessment plan (health and safety assessment, project risk register)
Communication plan	Understand the importance of effective project management communication Reflect on your communication skills Create a communications plan

Implement your project | Weeks 8-15

Learning support

There is support in all aspects of the learner’s journey throughout the programme.

A subject specialist tutor will support learners with the theory and assessment requirements throughout the programme
Pastoral care will be provided by the Invest pastoral team, who will be on-call and ready to assist from day one. They will provide help in any areas the learner may need and will have regular contact with each individual (confidential if required), as well as the groups throughout the programme.
Learners will be able to use their new mentoring knowledge and skills in a practical way with each other. The support you will give each other will be invaluable and develop into ongoing trusting and supportive relationships in their learning journey.
