Peter Renshaw
Maritime Tutor

Peter Renshaw
From a young age, Peter Renshaw has had a love for the sea: in it, on it and under it!

Peter was diving, fishing, sailing and swimming in his youth, which led him to 17 years in the maritime sector.

Starting out onboard the Spirit of New Zealand as a cadet, Peter gained a hoard of qualifications along the way as he worked his way up to 1st Officer.

He trained adult volunteers and managed youth programmes, giving him a good grounding in education. Overseas he worked on a charter vessel in Scotland and Europe for a stint before coming back and working in the Abel Tasman National Park, managing a Maritime Safety System.

Peter feels now is the time to give back and get more people involved in what he loves.

“The Superyacht programme does have some classroom time, but my style is more about getting out and doing it,” he says.

“We may spend some time learning how to read a chart, then jump on the boat and see what that means on the water!”

Peter enjoys passing on his experiences and finds one of the most satisfying parts of being a tutor is seeing it all come together for his students as they realise they can do it.

“If you’re keen to see the world, and follow the sun, there are jobs all over the place,” Peter says.
