NMIT students shine at Te Ramaroa Nelson Light Festival

The collaborative series of lighting installations created by five NMIT arts and media students was on display in the award winning NMIT arts and media building during this years festival.

Arts student Honor Stephenson says the concept for the series was taken from the recently refreshed light festival name ‘Te Ramaroa.’

“Te Ramaroa literally means beacon of light so we started with that,” says Honor.

“Each lighting installation linked to the next one and visually lead you through and finally up to the largest installation which was lit by projectors and seen from outside.”

Creative Industries Curriculum Manager Trisha Krishnasamy says Te Ramaroa provided a fantastic opportunity for NMIT arts and media students to hone their creative skills and produce something the public could be wowed by.

“From the moment you walked into the atrium and saw the first installation, you were literally drawn into the whole experience,” says Trisha.

“It was a fantastic opportunity for the public to come into NMIT’s creative space and see the incredible work our students produce.”

NMIT students have taken part in Te Ramaroa (formerly Nelson Light Festival) since it began in 2013. The festival aims to reflect the diversity, community spirit and artistic talents of the people of Nelson.

An exhibition of creative industry staff and tutors work is on in the G Space Gallery of the Arts and Media building and open to the public until Saturday 17 July.
