A new Top of the South Trades Academy (TOSTA) course aimed at giving secondary school students a taste of electrical engineering will begin in 2022.

Teaming up with EVolocity,(external link) NMIT’s automotive engineering programme(external link) will deliver the electrical-based trades course alongside its existing mechanical based trades course.

Learners are supplied with an EVolocity kit and under the guidance of NMIT tutors, are challenged with designing and creating their own electric vehicle. The objective is to create the fastest, most aerodynamic design which can sustain the demands of racing on a tight circuit.

The programme culminates with a nationwide EVolocity competition(external link) at the end of the year where learners race and showcase their creations.

EVolocity is an exciting programme that seeks to promote sustainability and careers in electrical engineering.

NMIT Engineering tutor Mason Van der Watt says the new course is a great way for young people to see if engineering could be their thing while still at school.

“It’s an introductory course giving students their first taste of electrical to see if it’s something they want to pursue further,” says Mason, “and it still has the mechanical parts including welding to make the trikes.”

Upon completion of the EV course, learners can advance to the one-year Certificate in Mechanical Engineering, Level 3,(external link) aimed at preparing for automotive industry apprenticeships or entry level employment.

Learners spend three days a week in the NMIT workshops and classrooms undertaking both theory and practical learning and two days in a work placement, putting their learning into practice.

Learners gain a general knowledge of engineering tools, machinery and equipment, as well as worksite processes and principles.

This programme is eligible for the fees free under the Targeted Training and Apprenticeships Fund (TTAF).(external link)

NMIT also offers several managed apprenticeship programmes delivered part-time and, in the evenings, to accommodate apprentices in full-time employment.

Programmes include light and heavy automotive engineering(external link), engineering fabrication,(external link) mechanical engineering(external link)
and carpentry(external link). Apply for free study with the Targeted Training and Apprenticeship Fund(external link), and gain a qualification in the growth industries of Te Tauihu.

With intakes currently open for programmes starting in 2022,(external link) now is the time to start your application process.
