Government funding announcements(external link) were made by Fletcher Tabuteau (Under-Secretary of Regional Economic Development) in Blenheim on Friday 24 July. A total of $53.3 million from the Provincial Growth Fund(external link) was earmarked for a range of Te Tauihu projects that will “transform the region, create jobs and make the Top of the South an even more attractive place to live, work and visit,” Fletcher Tabuteau said.

The New Zealand Wine Centre will help establish an integrated innovation, research and education centre and hub for grape and wine research and it is expected that up to 25 jobs will be created at the facility over the next 10 years. Wine is the backbone of Marlborough’s economy and it is only right the region should be home to such a prestigious industry and education centre of excellence. This fits well alongside the NMIT Marlborough strategy, with our commitment to invest, divest and collaboratively create a future-relevant campus environment that Marlborough can be proud of. Grant and Carole are proactively involved in development discussions to ensure NMIT needs are met.

Stage one of the New Zealand Wine Centre, Te Pokapū Wāina o Aotearoa, will provide offices, meeting rooms and co-shared space for wine research institutions and industry to collaborate. Stage two will provide a new gateway to the campus through the existing NMIT entrance which will be redeveloped and modernised. And stage three will provide laboratories, offices and future focused shared teaching spaces at the campus.

The centre will provide integrated facilities for organisations such as Bragato Research Institute(external link) and Food and Plant Research(external link) to work together with wine industry innovators, as well as with wine researchers from other Kiwi institutions and from around the world.
