Gaining Confidence on the way to studying Nursing

Study and Career Preparation programme provides a way in to study for your career.
Jayde

Hello my name is Jayde and I will be writing about my experience at NMIT.

I am a 18 year old, Pacific Island student (Māori and Tongan) starting my first steps to become a Registered Nurse.

Everything has been very new for me since I had just moved up from Christchurch, so it has been a struggle for me to be confident enough to make new friends. I started my year at Nayland College then found an amazing communication course, which is part of a bridging programme that leads you on to your Bachelor of Nursing. The communications course is part of the New Zealand Certificate in Study and Career Preparation, Health Option.

During the first term of this programme, I found that it made me think about my future and what I would like to achieve in the next ten years. I also gained experience on how to manage my time properly. I found this very useful since I had just come from high school and assessment due dates are very spread out.

I gained more confidence skills by doing activities with my peers including presentations. The teachers were lovely, always answering any questions or made themselves available for a tutor session with them. They supported me and always encouraged me to do my best.

The second term has just started and is more science based which I am enjoying very much. It is great learning something new everyday.

The New Zealand Certificate in Study and Career Preparation also offers options in Counselling and Social Work.
