Entrepreneurs unleashed at the Young Enterprise Scheme regional finals

The Young Enterprise Scheme students start their journey as inexperienced secondary students but by the time they get to the awards night they have mixed with the business community and developed a finely tuned entrepreneurial mindset.

Te Pūkenga NMIT is a proud partner of the Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme (YES) which helps shape ‘future leaders, changemakers and disruptors’ by creating authentic learning experiences and bringing enterprise into the classroom.

At the recent YES Regional Finals 2022, Wayne Jackson, NMIT Transitional Executive Lead presented a $5000 award to Olivae, a group of year 12 students from Waimea College, Nelson.

Their mission was to ‘provide a natural, healthy drink using produce from the local New Zealand horticulture, that will help to decrease the amount of health issues in New Zealand.’

They chose to create a loose-leaf olive tea out of locally sourced olive leaves. Olivae comes in three flavours plain olive, olive and boysenberry, and olive and lime.

Judge Cam Burns from Shuttlerock had high praise for the group.
"Olivae created a unique and innovative tea brand that is well differentiated in the multi-billion-dollar global tea market. The customer-centric product has strong branding, clear health benefits, and ultimately tastes great. The overall business model presented, and the progress made to date, are a testament to the group’s teamwork, resilience, and ability to embrace change."

Congratulations to Lani Adamson, Alysha Mutch, Olivia Parsons, Esther Gould, Lily-Anne Watts, Jessica York and Lily-Rose Phorn, teacher Naomi Chapman and principal Scott Haines.

The team plan to continue development of their product next year.

Jackson says Te Pūkenga NMIT is proud to be part of a scheme which inspires young people to discover their potential in business and in life.

The scheme helps young people develop confidence and resilience and is a good conduit for secondary students to progress on to further study with Te Pūkenga NMIT.

Top of the South YES regional Coordinator, Trina Zimmerman says involving students in YES helps them grow, discover new skills, and sort out what they want to do next.
“They are quite changed by the programme —through the course of the year they have presented in front of groups, developed a sales pitch for their product, and they feel so proud of themselves.”

The school receiving a Te Pūkenga NMIT award can chose how the funds will be used to support the YES scheme and future participants.
