Ākonga Welcome Hub vision realised

Ākonga Welcome Hub vision realised

The space was reconfigured based on feedback received from ākonga, and was designed to eliminate the ‘NMIT shuffle’; a dance across campus that prospective and current students were expected to perform as they were sent to find people or answers from curriculum areas.

Chris Newth, Customer Engagement Support is one of the kaimahi greeting ākonga as they enter the main building on the Nelson Campus.

Originally known as the Learner Hub, our new Ākonga Welcome Hub aligns with the principles of Te Pūkenga and reflects our core value of Manawa nui — we reach out and welcome in.

Anne Thoroughgood, Customer Engagement Liaison, says it’s quite busy with people walking in and approaching the new desk to discuss their situation.

“It’s effective,” Anne said, “I believe the Ākonga Welcome Hub is now more synchronised to meet ākonga needs.”

She has experienced several success stories where potential ākonga enrolled on the spot after experiencing such a seamless process.

The Ākonga Welcome Hub is a collaborative space resourced by members from Enrolments, Administration,  Engagement, and Student Support teams.
