A scary move for international student pays off
Liam King was a bit worried when he first arrived in New Zealand as he didn’t know where his next steps in life would lead him.
Moving with his family from South Africa in 2019, Liam said it was scary at first, but definitely worth the risk.
“I moved to New Zealand in the hope of being able to study architecture but found civil engineering at Te Pūkenga NMIT more affordable and practical,” he said. “The programme helped me meet new friends and find a future here.”
Having graduated with a New Zealand Diploma in Engineering (Civil)(external link) in 2021, Liam currently works in the construction industry and hopes to eventually become a contracting manager.
“The tutors [on the programme] were really amazing and extremely helpful, both within the course and for providing information on what to do and where to visit during days off,” Liam said.
“Although the programme was not what I was aiming to study, I started to really enjoy everything I learned and it made me look at things in the world with a different perspective, which is fantastic!”
Liam now calls New Zealand home and once his residency arrives, he plans to get his bachelor degree in civil engineering and do more courses to obtain new skills and knowledge.
“The manager, foreman and owner of the company I am working for are really supportive,” he said. “They have plans to send me for more qualifications which will help me to become a foreman.”
